Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction MBSR

mindfulness based stress reduction mbsr

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an empirically-supported 8-week course in mindful living developed in the late ’70s by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. MBSR has been found to positively and often profoundly affect participants’ ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological distress while learning to live life more fully.

Over four decades of published research indicates the training offered through the MBSR curriculum can help participants:

  • Reduce stress and emotional reactivity
  • Loosen the grip of negative habits and thought patterns
  • Improve self-compassion and self-care
  • Manage anxiety and depression
  • Decrease pain and medical symptoms
  • Improve overall well-being

Over the duration of the course, MBSR participants are introduced to the key principles of mindfulness, provided with instruction for formal and informal practices, and engage in short talks and discussions. With a commitment to involvement, both within and outside of class, participants are pointed towards practices that integrate mindfulness into daily life.

The 8-week program includes:

  • 8 weekly, 2.5 hr sessions
  • A 7.5-hour retreat
  • Audio recordings to guide home practice
  • Weekly reading materials

What participants have to say…

I recently took the MBSR program with Amy from Mindfulness in the Heartland, and I learned so much during the course. It was an 8-week course (in person) and really helped me to improve my meditation skills, become more mindful and present, and learn to be more in touch with my sensations, thoughts, and emotions. Amy is a wonderful teacher, very compassionate and patient. You will not regret it. I strongly recommend the MBSR program or her other offerings, to anyone who wants to improve their meditation, mindfulness, or general well-being.

Amy’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course provided 8-weeks of profound self-discovery that culminated in a degree of understanding about mindfulness and the methods I can use to apply mindfulness to my everyday life that exceeded my expectations. Her ability to explain the subject matter in a way that the novice practitioner can understand, appreciate, and apply mindfulness is what makes this course so valuable.

– Erik Hulse –

I learned so much from Amy’s class. Her non-judgmental teaching style and experience provided me with a new set of skills to ground myself in a stressful world. I highly recommend the MBSR course to anyone looking for more calmness in daily living.

– Jill Downen –

I took Amy’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course over the summer months. I am so glad that I invested in this act of self-care because it ultimately brought more joy, peace, and kindness into my life. I had been practicing various forms of mindfulness before the class began; however, the class experience helped me connect the dots between theory and the actual meditation practices. Reading books on mindfulness is helpful, but having a knowledgeable guide to walk me through the disciplines in a structured way deepened my experience and understanding of mindfulness. It helped me grow in my ability to move from my head to my body and heart with greater ease and skill. Amy is a compassionate, patient, and wise teacher who genuinely listens to and cares about her students. I highly recommend her courses.
